Lunar New Year Celebration

This free event will run from Madison Street to Madison Avenue on Saturday, February 10th, starting at 11 a.m. Cultural performers, including Lion Dance troupes, will entertain in the streets. Visitors are encouraged to bring their dogs to help welcome the Year of the Dog.

Chinese New Year Firecracker Ceremony and Festival

Head to Sara D. Roosevelt Park on Friday, February 16th, to join this free festival, where hundreds of thousands of firecrackers will be set off to discourage evil spirits. Wander through various vendor booths, taste traditional Chinese food, and purchase handmade crafts. Finally, check out the lion dances and festive decorations.

Temple Bazaar at Flushing Town Hall

Flushing Town Hall in Queens will host a traditional bazaar festival for the new year on Saturday and Sunday, February 10th-11th. Here, you can check out music, dancing, and martial arts demonstrations, learn how to do calligraphy and paper-cutting, and eat some delicious foods from China’s major regions.

History of the Show

A show like this can’t be found anywhere else, even in China.

Why? Because the Chinese Communist Party sees demonstrations and celebrations of traditional culture as a threat to its power.

That’s why, in 2006, the show was created by Chinese artists in New York – as a way to revive and revel in these beautiful traditions before they’re forgotten.

Shen Yun - Performance Information and Format

The show lasts around 2 hours and includes 15 dances with a live orchestra, elaborate costumes, and detailed, animated sets as the backdrop.

You’ll be taken to various times and places in Chinese history, and explore settings and characters from Chinese mythology.

Ticketing Information for the Show

Tickets are $16 for adults, and children 12 years and younger get in free when they’re accompanied by a paying adult.

Exhibit times are as follows:

  • Wednesday – Friday, January 24-26: 12PM to 9PM
  • Saturday, January 27: 10AM to 9PM
  • Sunday, January 28: 10AM to 6PM
