The 2017 NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade Celebrates Irish Roots

Put on your best green outfit and pin a shamrock on your lapel, because March is coming, and with it arrives the 2017 NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This annual event is full of festive fun for celebrating Irish pride and heritage in the city. Everyone is Irish on St. Patty's Day in New York!

This year, the New York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is happening on Friday, March 17, 2017 from 11am to 5pm. The parade route will follow 5th Avenue from 44th Street to 79th Street.

Parade Participants

There are a variety of organizations and groups that march in the St. Patty’s Day Parade in NYC. Every year, the parade is led by the Grand Marshall as well as the Irish 69th Regiment. They are followed by Irish county societies, Irish societies of NYC, schools and colleges, Irish language societies, Emerald societies, and many more groups and organizations.

Other St. Patrick’s Day Festivities

For other St. Patty’s Day events, try the Irish Arts Center’s Annual St. Patrick’s Day Open Day on March 12th, which features music, dancing, crafts, tea time, face painting and more.

Or, attend Sober St. Patrick’s Day at the St. Patrick’s Youth Center Gym on March 17th. The event will celebrate Ireland without alcohol and instead will feature authentic dance, music, food, and drinks.

Special Exhibits and Events: March and Beyond
This March 4, the new exhibit, What in the World is a Herbarium? will come to the Gardens. Discover how scientists, scholars, and botanists are preserving plant specimens and saving the world’s endangered plant species.

Meanwhile, all throughout March and April, head to the Gardens for Orchid Evenings. The exhibit The Orchid Show: Thailand will be on display amid dancing, music, and cocktails.

Starting in April and lasting until October, see botanical-inspired sculptures on display at the Gardens from artist Dave Chihuly.

Children and Family Activities in NYC
There’s lots of fun for families at the Botanical Gardens.

Science Camp lets kids explore the natural world, see behind-the-scenes at the Gardens, and undertake scientific investigations. For instance, this upcoming April, enroll your K-5 children in Spring into Science, where they can explore and observe blooming buds, busy insects, and nesting animals.

At the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden, kids and families get to learn where their food comes from, tend vegetable beds, and explore cooking with the bounty of the earth. Daily gardening activities are always happening to let you truly get your hands dirty.

The Winter Village is a fun place through March for winter activities. Skating at The Rink at Bryant Park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. This is one of the only venues that offers free ice skating in NYC!

Select shopping is also open through March 5th at the open-air, European-style market. Drop the kids off at the rink and browse for some unique items.

There’s plenty to eat at the Winter Village, too. Step into the Skating Pavilion to warm up and have a treat from the Snack Bar, with a delicious hot chocolate. Meanwhile, Public Fare is a rink-side restaurant that offers a sit-down meal.

Special Events
Special events will be held until the end of the Bryant Park Winter Village’s run. Participate and liven up your winter season.

The Winter Carnival lasts through February 4. It’s a wildly popular event celebrating snow and ice. Just some of the fun includes a skating showcase with Johnny Weir, an Ice Ball, Ice Castle, free curling and skating lessons, and an outdoor Winter Brew House.

Exerskate at Bryant Park is a fun way to warm up and get moving. It’s held Thursdays through March 5 at 8 a.m., and you’ll be led through ice skating circuits that hockey players and figure skaters use. Get ready to sweat and become a better skater.

See the World’s Top Dogs at the 2017 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Dog lovers should plan on heading to Madison Square Garden this February to attend the famed Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. This event is the last word in top dogs and will feature the best of breeds from all over the world.

This year, the dog show held in New York City will take place on February 13 and 14, 2017.

Daytime Sessions/Events

On February 13 for daytime sessions (from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), there will be breed judging (for toy, herding, hound, and non-sporting dogs) as well as Junior Showmanship preliminaries.

On February 14, daytime sessions will include breed judging for sporting, working, and terrier dogs, plus Junior Showmanship preliminaries.

Evening Sessions/Events

The main events will happen in the evening for the 141st WKC Dog Show. On February 13, starting at 8:00 p.m., there will be group judging for toy, hound, herding, and non-sporting dogs.

The evening of February 14 is the big night – the Junior Showmanship Finals begin at 7:30 p.m., and group judging will take place at 8:00 p.m. for sporting, working, and terrier dogs. Finally, the end of the night will crown the Best in Show.

What to Expect

Ticketholders can expect a bevy of beautiful dogs. Remember to check out the winners of the preliminaries on February 14 on the Red Carpet at 6:00 p.m. before the big prizes are awarded. This will be hosted at the Expo Center within the Garden. Meet the best dogs in the world and make your personal pick for the top prize.
